Stress and anxiety

Nowadays, people often use the terms stress and anxiety interchangeably and, in truth, many of the symptoms are shared between the two. Typically people may experience symptoms such as

  • Being irritable
  • Increased heart beat
  • Muscle tension
  • Problems sleeping
  • Feeling on edge and unable to relax
  • etc.

However, medical professionals actually categorize them as separate feelings. So what is the difference?

Difference between stress and anxiety

The difference between stress and anxiety come from the root cause of the feeling and trigger.

What is stress?

Stress is the feeling of being under excessive mental or emotional pressure from external situations. Many of life’s demand can cause stress, most commonly work, relationships, family issues, money problems, or daily hassles such as traffic jams, time pressures, picking up the kids from school etc.

A little bit of pressure is usually not an issue, however when we are unable to cope with the pressure, pressure turns into stress. Stress affects people in different ways and what one person finds stressful can be normal to another.

Stress is not an illness but it can cause serious illness if it becomes too excessive and prolonged. Day to day stress typically associated with frustration, nervousness and anger.

What is anxiety?

NHS says : “Anxiety is a feeling of unease, worry or fear. Everyone feels anxious at some point in their life for example before a job interview or an exam, but for some it can be an on-going problem.”

A lot of anxiety stems from fear. Fear and worry about something with an uncertain outcome, about what we think may happen in the future.
