At the time of writing this article, the Covid-19 vaccine is making common headlines around the world. Not everybody will want to have it and some will have their reasons for being for or against vaccines in general. But what if you want it and you have a fear of needles?
Do you have a phobia that is ruling your life?
Perhaps until now you have convinced yourself that it is just the way it is and you get by.
Many if not all of my clients are just like you.
Until one day, enough is enough! They have had enough of the fear, the anxiety, the dread, that sick feeling and most importantly the “missing out”!
What is a phobia?
A phobia is defined as an intense fear of a specific object, situation, place, feeling or animal that is out of proportion to the actual risks posed by the object or situation.
Something would not be considered a phobia if most reasonable people would be afraid of it, for instance, most people would experience intense fear at the prospect of swimming in a river known to have crocodiles in it. Such fear would not only be natural but also a healthy response that may save your life.
Common phobias and fears include heights, flying, highway driving, closed-in places, flying insects, snakes, and needles. However, we can develop phobias of virtually anything.
Most phobias develop in childhood brought on by a traumatic event, but they can also develop in adults. Adults with such intense fears recognize that their fear is excessive and extreme, but they are unable to control it. The feared object or situation is usually avoided or anticipated with intense anxiety.
The personal cost of phobias
When the fear provoking object or situation is unlikely to present itself in everyday life, avoidance seems an easy enough to manage and it may not affect everyday life at all.
However, if you are a phobia sufferer you will already know that avoidance as well as any anticipated anxiety generated can cause significant disruption on your life on a social, occupational or other functional level.
Does your phobia deprive you from:
– Career opportunities
– Dream holidays destinations
– Spending quality time with their loved ones going to the theatre or cinema
– Enjoying a relaxing time in the outdoors in the summer with family and friends
– Getting basic medical or dental treatments etc.
The truth is, you do not have to spend the rest of your life controlled by a phobia.
The choice of which to choose will depend of the client preference but also the type of phobia and how it came about.
