What is anxiety?

Most people experience anxiety at some point in their lives. Anxiety is the emotion we feel when we think we are under threat and cannot cope with a  situation for example job interviews or meetings at work, family reunions or large gatherings, or dealing with health concerns.

Anxiety can be experienced by everyone but for some people anxiety can seem either unbearable, or like it’s always there, or stop them from enjoying life or doing what they want to do.

When the feeling of dread or worry is constantly there, therapy for treating and managing anxiety and coping with panic attacks can help.

What are the Symptoms of Anxiety?

Our brain is designed to protect us and, when faced with danger, it triggers the fight, flight or freeze response in the body to help us run away, or stand and "fight" the source of danger.

Whether the threat is real or imagined, the physical symptoms are the same and you may experience some of the following symptoms:

  • Feeling as though your heart is racing
  • Finding it difficult to concentrate on things
  • Noticing increased sweating
  • Sensing "butterflies in the stomach" or trembling in the legs or hands
  • Tense muscles
  • Feeling light-headed or nauseous
  • Your breathing may become shallow and fast

What is a panic attack/anxiety attack?

A panic attack or anxiety attack is a sudden and intense feeling of anxiety. The body sensations are similar to anxiety but enhanced and may include chest pain as well as difficult breathing.

Most of them last a few minutes but they may last up to 20 minutes.

Although it can feel very scary and overwhelming it is important to remember that panic attacks cannot harm you.
